How my time at Salford Business School would enhance my career as Marketing Director in Biotechnology business?

As a Director of Marketing & Business Development working at a distribution-based biotechnology company in Jordan and with a background in Medical Technologies, it was a bit difficult to choose the right topic around my masters program!

At first glance, anyone would think that I should focus on something related to Biotechnology Sciences and continue my major study in medical technologies.

Believe it or not, that would be a wrong choice! Since I have no intentions to continue my career as a lab person or get engaged with R&Ds (Research & Developments) programs, then this would be a waste of time and efforts.

The other debate was; Would I really need a masters degree in business or marketing? I’m already holding a solid position and gained a lot of experience in international business and marketing during the past ten years and did a lot of self learning to be distinguished among my peers, so what’s the point of getting a Masters degree?

The answers to all my concerns fell into three main facts;

Define the NEED!

My daily work involves establishing marketing plans, programs and projects that is implemented locally and regionally, evaluating the existing processes and utilizing ideas for improvement.

The department I’m managing is also responsible for presenting international suppliers in the region to allocate their products to the right customers in the field of Biotechnology and that requires marketing campaigns, organizing workshops, and presenting at trade shows.

This would definitely need a great knowledge in biotechnology but on top of that it would also need an extensive Marketing expertise.

Follow your PASSION but first build a MISSION!

I started my career as a laboratory technologist at a reputable institute and gradually excelled to end-up (in 11 years) as a Laboratory Supervisor and Section Head for one of the most sensitive departments in the lab; the Molecular Diagnostics & Immunogenetics department. I loved what I was doing and and always felt passionate to new technologies.

My career path took another direction towards business within the biotechnology industry and from day one I found myself diving into this track with full passion.

As a person with the sense of the end-user but wearing the hat of the supplier, my main mission has become to fulfill the market need with new technologies and services but in a creative approach to satisfy the end users’ requirements.

Therefor, a Masters program in Marketing would definitely empower my current position and equip me with the needed tools to succeed further.

Never stop learning!

Someone may think that if he/she is already in a stable career, reached a significant professional level, successful with what he/she does and gained a lot of experience, should never think of going back to school. Well, that’s not true!

From my short experience at Salford Business School, I realized how little I know about marketing since the moment I started with the first module. The rich content of its Masters program and type of assignments with practical implementation has given me a broader insight on how to achieve my goals and examine the outcomes on-time.

“The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” - Sydney J. Harris

With the focus on Marketing International Business and other subjects, I believe that I would not just be able to enrich my current position but I would also consider to start-up an advisory and consultation services in the near future.
